The Telegraph reports that the Government will announce that voters will need to show ID in order to vote (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/10/12/voters-will-have-show-casting-ballot-prevent-electoral-fraud/)

Voter ID is a blatant attempt by the Tories to rig the result of the next general election. I have written to our MP Stephen Hammond asking him to stand with me to defend democracy. Not all Wimbledon residents who are eligible to vote have either a passport or driving licence. They deserve their right to vote.

Letter to Stephen Hammond MP

Dear Stephen,

We don’t have a voter fraud problem in the UK. Yet it is being widely reported that the government plans to bring in nationwide voter ID requiring us to bring along a passport or driving licence or else we can’t vote. This will have a devastating impact on democracy.

It will hit the poorest voters hardest. 3.5 million voters don’t have any photo ID. Recent trials saw eligible voters turned away, denied their vote. In some instances this could potentially change the outcome of the election.

At a time of great unease and disquiet over the direction this country is taking it should be more important than ever to nurture and increase democratic participation. Instead this shambolic government is attempting to brutally reduce the number of people who will be able to use their hard-fought democratic right to vote. Please join me Stephen in condemning this shameful proposal.

Citizens of this country are not required to carry identity papers. They shouldn’t be required to carry them to vote. I will be sharing this letter and encouraging Wimbledon residents to stand with me to defend democracy.

Jackie Schneider
